Trails for Memorial Day Weekend around Southern California

Posted by Catherine V. on

Memorial Day weekend is quickly approaching! What's better than hiking when there's no work or school for three whole days?! We've gathered three different trails for different kinds of hikers! Whether you're spending it with friends, family or your significant other, we've got you covered!

For those with little ones:

Griffith Park -  4730 Crystal Springs Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90027

We know that hiking with your little one(s) isn't always easy, so Berlin Forest is the perfect trail! The entire trail is only 0.3 miles and will only take half an hour to finish so you don't have to worry about the kids being sick of it! When you're done with the trail, you could always take them to the Griffith Observatory or the Autry Museum of the American West for some quality time together.  If your kids are older and up for a bit more of a challenge, Amir's Garden might just be what you're looking for. This hike is also less than a mile and takes approximately one hour to finish. The five acre plot of land was meant to be an attractive rest stop for hikers and provides a spectacular view of the San Gabriel Mountains.

For the adventurous hikers:

Joshua Tree National Park - 74485 National Park Drive, Twentynine Palms, CA 92277

Just two hours east of LA, Joshua Tree National Park encompasses two different ecosystems, the Mojave and the Colorado. We recommend the Lost Horse Mine for the intermediate hikers that want a taste of California during the gold rush. The Lost Horse Mill is one of the most well preserved mills in the United States, and produced over 5 million dollars worth of gold and silver while it was still active. The hiking trail itself, if you go around the Lost Horse Mountain is just a bit short of 7 miles and should take about 3-4 hours to complete. If you would rather spend more time exploring the mill itself, you could start off at Keys View Road and follow the trails. The round trip is just around 4 miles, about 1-2 hours.

There's tons of other hiking trails around Joshua Tree: Inspiration Peak and Cholla Cactus Garden for beginners, Wonderland Ranch and Mastodon Peak for intermediate hikers, and the Ryan Mountain as well as the Queen Mountain for those who are more experienced in hiking.

For those who prefer the scenic route:

Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve - 15101 Lancaster Rd, Lancaster, CA 93536

If you're all about that Instagram life, the poppy reserve in Lancaster will definitely boost your likes! As the drought in California has ended, the poppies have fully bloomed. You're guaranteed to spot the field of neon orange flowers from a distance. The hike itself is fairly short, only 3.3 miles and shouldn't take more than 2 hours to complete. If you'd like a shorter or longer hike, there's plenty of options at the park. The paths are very easy to follow and maps can be found at the visitor's center. There are also guided tours within the park but do call them at (661) 724-1180 to confirm their schedules. Parking is $10 per vehicle so you might want to carpool with friends and family to save!

We hope you all have a great Memorial Day weekend outdoors with your friends and family. Don't forget to tag @PMoutdoor or hashtag #LiveBreatheHike if you post your hikes on Instagram or Facebook!
